Abstract

FROELICH, Tatiane Cristine  and  SEHN, Amanda Schöffel. Maternal feelings concerning child development at eight months old. Pensando fam. [online]. 2019, vol.23, n.1, pp. 58-72. ISSN 1679-494X.

This study aimed to investigate maternal feelings concerning child development at eight months of the baby. Twenty-eight primiparous mothers participated, at a time when their babies were eight months old. The mothers answered an interview about motherhood and about child development. Qualitative content analysis evidenced motor, intellectual/cognitive, language and socioemotional achievements. Mothers reported surprise and admiration about the achievements of the baby. In addition, feelings of tiredness were present. It was also mentioned a greater autonomy of the baby, which allowed movements of separation and approach of the mother, provoking new demands of care. In summary, the data suggest the intensity of the feelings experienced by the mothers in the face of the new baby´s achievements. To offer spaces for listening to mothers could be an important strategy to help mothers, because those feelings may be shared and recognized as part of the motherhood.
