Abstract

SILVA, Francieli Maria da; VITORINO, Maitê  and  PORTES, João Rodrigo Maciel. Suitors' beliefs about adopting a disabled child. Pensando fam. [online]. 2019, vol.23, n.2, pp. 240-255. ISSN 1679-494X.

This article aims to investigate the beliefs that the adoption suitors have about the possibility of adopting a disabled child. Nine couples were participating on this study, they were between 29 and 51 years old. They waited approximately one year to be called for a psychosocial evaluation in the State of Santa Catarina. For the data collection, the semi-structured interview was used as an instrument, and the themes investigated were: couples' motivations for adoption practice, knowledge about the disability, what they think about the adoption of a disabled child and the characteristics that they hope for in the children's future. The results indicated that the barriers stand out, with the most outstanding being: dependence, time and financial condition. Regarding the characteristics, the participating couples reported a certain wish for a child similar to them, both physical appearance and personality.
