Abstract

EMIDIO, Thassia Souza  and  SILVA, Fabieli Gonzaga da. Conjugality and acquired physical disability: a study from the partner perspective. Pensando fam. [online]. 2021, vol.25, n.2, pp. 3-18. ISSN 1679-494X.

The objective of this study was to reflect on the resonances of physical disability acquired in the marital bond from the perspective of partners of people with disabilities. It is a qualitative, exploratory-descriptive research, which used the semi-directed interview as a data collection instrument. Five partners of people with acquired physical disabilities who had already had a marital relationship prior to the episode that led to physical disability participated in this study. The collected material was transcribed and submitted to thematic content analysis. The analysis of the data was carried out trying to trace a dialogue between the interviewees' speech and the theoretical discussions and reflections on the bond, the conjugality and the acquired physical disability. The results showed that there is a process of reconfiguration of the conjugal bond from the experience of acquired disability, one can observe the redefinition of the parameters of conjugal life and the various difficulties that they encounter in this process. The importance of rehabilitation was also highlighted in the reorganization of family life, in the marital relationship and in the construction of future projects.
