Abstract

According to the ecological model, violence against women is determined by several interacting factors; in this way, different elements of personal sphere of family members as well as social, economic and cultural characteristics of family context, influence in its appearance and maintenance. From this perspective, a qualitative study was conducted with 33 mothers from a community of Villa El Salvador. The main characteristics of violence against women were explored through focus groups, the factors that detain it and beliefs that keep women in violent relationships as well. This paper describes main findings which are substantiated in fragments from women's discourse. Finally the main results are discussed considering the characteristics of the zone studied.
