Abstract

NORENA MEJIA, Marcela; ROJAS SEGURA, Natalia  and  NOVOA GOMEZ, Mónica María. Relationan analysis of the contingencies associated to sport practices and it's relation with eating disorders in teenagers between 16 and 18 years old. Diversitas [online]. 2006, vol.2, n.2, pp. 229-240. ISSN 1794-9998.

This study analyzed the contingencies associated to sport practices and it’s relation with eating Disorders in 42 teenage women between 16 and 18 years old from Bogotá, intentionally assigned en three groups: Group A, teenagers that belong in a sports team, Group B, teenagers that practice exercise regularly, Group C, teenagers that do not practice any sports only their Physical Education class. The explanation frame that organized the investigation was based on the behavioral theory of Epling and Pierce (1993), known as Activity Anorexia. The evaluation was composed of two instruments: Eating Disorders Inventory (Garner et al, 1983), which measured Eating Disorders, previously validated for this population and a Behavioral Interview that gave data on social demographic factors, psychosocial and types of sport also validated. This non experimental investigation, of descriptive and co relational nature had a comparative groups design. The analysis showed significant relations between the three groups, being Group B, the most vulnerable, which was accorded with the literature. The Group A, teenagers practiced sports and were part of a team with goals aimed for victory, more than an interest in their body image; while Group C, which did not practice any sports or exercise, although presented considerable levels of awareness of their body image. It was recommended to health professionals, teachers and coaches, to get to know the Eating Disorders, and the risk the exercise practice, sports and sedentary, in any of these teenagers, if done in inadequately.
