Abstract

ANTONIO BOTELHO ANDRADE, Luiz  and  DA SILVA, Edson Pereira. To know and the kwowledge: some observations about the living and the time. Ciênc. cogn. [online]. 2005, vol.4, pp. 35-41. ISSN 1806-5821.

Based on Humberto Maturana's and Francisco Varela's ideas, it is maintained that all living being are cognitive systems and, therefore, are able to know the place where they live. However, not all of them are able of talking about the sequence of events involved in their way of living, which means they are not able to recognize the history. This activity is what is defined as knowledge: the use of the language to make reference to the history of the way of living, which is restricted to mankind. The novelty of this article is the distinction between to know and the knowledge, by means of incorporating history to the autopoiesis theory. This article also discusses the relevance of language to the production of any kind of knowledge system.

Keywords : to know; knowledge; language; learning; teaching; epistemology.
