The aim of this article is to understand qualitatively the alteration in the consciousness that originates the lucid dream, and to evaluate the transition between the usual state of oneiric consciousness and the non usual state of lucidity. Under a phenomenological perspective, it was intended to contribute for the understanding of the inherent psychic and metacognitive modifications during the installation of the lucidity in the dream, including their inner mnemonic and perceptual mechanisms. The defended hypothesis is that the dream recognition involves the data combination in recent autobiographical memory and the acceptance of the dream images realistic impact as possible to an oneiric state. © Ciências & Cognição 2005; Vol. 05: 67-83.
