LORANDI FERREIRA CARNEIRO, Lígia. Deafness: losses and gains. Ciênc. cogn. [online]. 2005, vol.6, n.1, pp. 142-144. ISSN 1806-5821.
Human infants begin to acquire their language in the first month of life, and left-lateralized brain regions similar to those of the adults are already active well before the onset of speech production. The auditory sensorial deprivation leads to a reorganization of cortical functions. In this way, deafness induces an atypical lateralization for memory localization, while the acquisition of the sign language improves the performance in visuospatial tasks. © Ciências & Cognição 2005; Vol. 06: 142-144.
