Abstract

DA SILVA GOMES DE OLIVEIRA, Eloiza. The "teacher burnout" as a phenomenon of the modernity: the teachers in the wonderland. Ciênc. cogn. [online]. 2006, vol.7, n.1, pp. 27-41. ISSN 1806-5821.

The article approaches frequent manifestations of the "teacher burnout" - indifference, apathy, motivation lack - and psychosomatic symptoms (anguish, phobias, panic crises), and presents results of a survey accomplished with 120 teachers of Rio de Janeiro, on the causes of the dissatisfaction with the profession. We used as metaphor Alice in the Country of the Marvels, story written in 1845 by Lewis Carroll, to describe the causes of these manifestations, subsidizing interventions of the Education Psychology to minimize this situation. The theoretical references includes Freud's work, with the sublimation concepts and transfer libidinal for institutions; Marx, with the notions of alienation and fetishism; and Dejours, with works relative to the collective strategies of defense used in the work, the alienation and the virility. Among the indicative social and political phenomena of the "teacher burnout" we chose two, quite characteristic: the teacher as member of the proletarian class, which approximates him of the "proletarian class" work condition, and the teaching as feminine profession. © Ciências & Cognição 2006; Vol. 07: 27-41.

Keywords : teacher burnout; stress; proletarian class; feminine profession.
