The aim of this article is to shown the characteristics of the depressive disorders presents in the elderly, with a psychoneuroendocrinological approach. First of all, it is described the physical disabilities that come with aging, as well as the possible influence of live stile. The most frequently endocrines alterations related to aging are presented in addition to the general aspects of depression and its significance in the third-age clinic. In the context is checked the neuropsychological contributions to establish a specific diagnostic, to employ a precise therapeutic approach and to obtain effective psychosocial interventions for depression in elderly. © Ciências & Cognição 2006; Vol. 07: 111-121.
