According the historic vision and the contextual analyses, the work memory has been studied to evaluate activities in several types of work. Its study, focused by several sciences point of view, has significantly contributed for the construction and understanding of cognitive processes involved with work activity, as well as to the knowledge improvement of made decision processes . The memory is an important brain function because it is related to the learning processes. All our knowledge and skills are stored in different types of memories, allowing our orientation in time and space. The knowledge representation is obtained inside this memory context, and its processes allow us to store and rescue these knowledge for their use in day-by-day and future activities. As the cognitive function of the memory is the base for learning, the present review work intends to approach conceptual aspects related to the importance of work memory in the knowledge management. © Ciências & Cognição 2006; Vol. 09: xxx-xxx.
