Abstract

DA SILVA OLIVEIRA, Flávio Ismael  and  RODRIGUES, Sérgio Tosi. Affordances: the relation between agent and the environment. Ciênc. cogn. [online]. 2006, vol.9, pp. 120-130. ISSN 1806-5821.

As a visually sensitive organism, the human (agent), during the interaction with environment, controls part of their activities through of the capitation of information by the visual system. Such capitation is determined by intentions and capacities and for the available information in the environment. This way, it is fundamental for Gibson (1977, 1979/1986) to understand which available information for the agent is indeed perceived and contribute to a dynamic interaction with the middle. The concept of affordances specifically refers to the agent, expressing possibilities of action offered by the environment. Thus, the purpose of this study is to analyze the Gibson's (1979/1986) concept of affordance and its theoretical and philosophical implications, especially those related to the notions of information and perception. The concept of affordances involves questions that need to be further detailed, which possibility the access to some new ideas that aid in the understanding of the interaction agent-environment, causing repercussions and stimulating the scientific and philosophical debate. © Ciências & Cognição 2006; Vol. 09: xxx-xxx.
