Abstract The age of information in which we live demands reflection on the contents taught and on the strategies employed in the classroom. The motivation and the development of the scientific education are necessary as they help the pupil to better follow the evolution of science, the transformations which occur in the nature and in the history of mankind. The teaching of science should stimulate the scientific reasoning and it should not be only informative. This work describes a methodology of science teaching, applied in classes of the fifth grade of the fundamental education, in the years of 2005 and 2006. The experimentation, the work group and the cooperative learning among pupils are focus on the development and discussion of this methodology. The results prove the efficiency of this methodology, which shows the development of essential pre-requisites on the formation of the scientific education of the student. The praxis in the classroom should be discussed aiming at the application of the scientific education in the schools.© Ciências & Cognição 2007; Vol. 10: 84-92.
