Abstract Researchers interested in the genealogical method are invited to looking for discontinuities and ruptures in the history. Then, this paper focuses the genealogy method, used by Michel Foucault, in the analysis of the productive side of the power. The methods used in this paper are: (1) the analysis of the social disciplinary practices and (2 the analysis of the discursive formations. The power is not somewhat static. It is very dynamic and productive; and it has a positivistic site, according to Foucault. In this way, the power is able to produce the truth of a historical period, in a specific historical context, by disciplinary practices. The disciplinary power produces knowledge, truth, individual and the individual psyche. © Ciências & Cognição 2007; Vol. 10: 178-198.
