Abstract

TIMM, Maria Isabel et al. The computational turn of the philosophy and its influence in the educational research. Ciênc. cogn. [online]. 2007, vol.11, pp. 02-20. ISSN 1806-5821.

Abstract This paper reflects on the confluence of philosophical and scientific thoughts in the technological context that have been revealed by the commoditization of computers in all areas of production, representation, distribution and acknowledgment since the end of the Twentieth century. It describes and contextualizes expressions such as computational turn in philosophy that was mentioned in the USA in the 90's. It also aims at connecting the expression with the familiarity developed by a great number of thinkers and the contemporary universe of the machine intelligence (Daniel Dennet). Those thinkers state the overcoming of refusal or odd attitude towards the computational world for the impossibility of giving up the cognitive potentialities and understanding of human mind reflected in hardware and software in increasing levels of sophistication and learning capacity. It describes and contextualizes the expression computational mind (based on Steve Pinker's description) simultaneously used in a multidisciplinary, reflexive, scientific and pragmatic way in the Cognitive Sciences that promote a comfortable dialogue among Philosophy, IA, Neurosciences, Logic, Linguistics and Anthropology. In the convergence of great contemporary contributions of the areas mentioned, it aims at reflecting on the emergency of new paradigms to educational research, which take into consideration a new philosophical, technological and multidisciplinary view.

Keywords : computational turn; computational mind; educational research.
