Abstract Proposes an analysis about the use of internet by society based on a dialectic approach, stating its major concepts, and comparing it to alternative approaches used by other authors. Presents different views of the use of internet: the "Information Highway" view, and the view of a cooperative and communitarian communication practice. Describes examples of online communities of knowledge investigated during research phase. Reflects about the collective intelligence in cyberspace, associating it to the information concept adopted in this work. Finishes indicating the relevance of online communities of knowledge to the formation of the collective intelligence, and its contribution for the Knowledge Society.
