Abstract

BOREM LIMA, Gercina Ângela. Categorization as a cognitive process. Ciênc. cogn. [online]. 2007, vol.11, pp. 156-167. ISSN 1806-5821.

Abstract This is a preliminary study on categorization as a cognitive process. The essence of the cognitive approach in knowledge organization results from a convergence between human perception, cognition and the structures of knowledge, relating the diverse processes of the science of the information, yielding a unified and efficient categorization. It presents definitions of concept, category and the process of categorization as a cognitive process. It also presents the classic model of knowledge categorization based on the Aristotelian ideas and the prototype model of categorization by Eleanor Rosch the 1970s. The antagonist positions of the classic model and the prototype model are confronted; the first with the categories only defined by the properties shared by all members of the class, and the second with some members better condensing the most characteristic traces of the category.

Keywords : categorization; cognitive sciences; prototype categorization model; classic categorization model..
