Abstract The motivation of the students is a problem that affects all educational levels of education. The promotion of self motivation of the students has shown a promising strategy. Based on the Self-Determination Theory, the survey aimed to raise the psychometric properties of a Brazilian version of the Scale of Academic Motivation (EMA), with a group of academics from the region of the northern state of Parana. Factor Analysis was performed with extraction of the principal components, analysis of internal consistency, descriptive statistics and the Pearson correlation. The seven factors found showed good internal consistency, with the exception of the evaluation of the extrinsic motivation by identified regulation. The correlations between variables supported the proposition of a continuum of self-determination for the regulation of the types of behavior. The results indicate the need for continuity in studies for the use of scale as a tool for collecting information about the motivation of college students Brazilians.
