Abstract

AMARANTE RIBEIRO, Lincoln Almir  and  CANDIDO, Gláucia Vieira. The cognitive semantic universalism in an issue about color terms in the Shanenawa indigenous language (Pano). Ciênc. cogn. [online]. 2008, vol.13, n.1, pp. 152-162. ISSN 1806-5821.

In this paper we present and discuss the data referring to the color terms of the Shanenawa language of the Pano family, in an attempt to classify these therms in the evolutive scale proposed by Berlin and Kay in the context of the cognitive semantic universalism. We describe the main lines of the theoretical perspectives emphasizing the controversy between linguistic relativism and cognitive semantic universalism. Previously we present the appropiate nomenclature used in the development our analysis. We show that the Shanenawa language and other languages of same family cannot be classified in terms of color evolution and that the evolution proposed by Berlin and Kay is not valid at least where it concerns with the languages of Pano family with the same timeline linguistic evolution.

Keywords : relativism; cognitive semantic universalism; color terms; indigenous language; Shanenawa language..
