FREIRE, Verena de Melo  e  PEREIRA, Marcos Emanoel. Stereotypes of the athletes who has suffered injuries. Ciênc. cogn. [online]. 2009, vol.14, n.2, pp. 225-234. ISSN 1806-5821.

The purpose of this study was to obtain information about stereotyping athletes who have suffered injuries, to establish if they prove to be negative and to what they referred. In order to achieve this, a survey was made with 83 participants, 23 of which were physically active, 31 had no involvement in sports and 29 were involved in sports in different ways. The results revealed that the participants believed that injured athletes show fear and anxiety and that managers and sponsors do not want to support them. On the other hand, participants do not agree that injured athletes are losers or solitary people, or that they are less valuable than others or that they will never regain their performance. Comparing the characteristics of the sample, it was revealed that there are negative beliefs about athletes who have been injured. These convictions are present especially among those participants who were not involved in sports and who were not physically active or who were over the age of 40. This data confirms the belief that groups are stereotyped more frequently when people are not familiar with them and that older people are less likely to change their convictions
