The present article approaches the motivation for learning of foreign language in the school context. The involvement of learners in each discipline of curriculum varies much in function of several individual and contextual factors, linked to the motivation. An educational problem that has been detected consists in the desmotivation generalized to lean foreign language, required since the fifth series. It's, therefore, a promising area for researches in our field, but still less explored. Thus, the objective of this study is to explore the subject of motivation to learn foreign language using as theoretical referential the self-determination theory. For this, it was based on international researchers due to there are not researches developed in Brazil on this thematic. With the use of the self-determination theory it attempts to understand the motivational determinants and to discover contexts promoters of ways of motivation self-determined. It considers that some alternatives to reach the students' involvement are represented by the intrinsic motivation and the auto-regulated forms of extrinsic motivation
