SCHAFERA, Priscilla Santos; OLIVEIRA-MENEGOTTO, Lisiane de  and  TISSER, Luciana. Stroke: psychological repercussions from a case report. Ciênc. cogn. [online]. 2010, vol.15, n.2, pp. 202-215. ISSN 1806-5821.

Abstract This research describes a case of a 47 years old man who had his life style drastically changed after a stroke caused hemiparesthesia on his left side. We propose a discussion about the importance of developing a treatment focusing on the cognitive distortions related to the damage of a neurologic pathology that seeks the social and psychological adjustment aiming improvement in life quality. The patient, after signing the Term of Consent, was dully treated in a school based office in the Metropolitan Area of Porto Alegre (RS. Brazil) following a cognitive-behavioral approach. After 20 sessions of 45 minutes, patient had intensified some prior to the stroke symptoms as well as some new cognitive distortions related to the neurologic damage. The results showed that psychotherapy allowed the patient to adjust his psychological and social life, reducing anxiety and depression symptoms as well as improving quality of life and his level of independence. These data shows that cognitive distortions were corrected by psychotherapy. © Cien. Cogn. 2010; Vol. 15 (2): 202-215.
