BOUYER, Gilbert Cardoso. Pragmatism and cognition: self, mind, world and truth in the pragmatic knowledge theory. Ciênc. cogn. [online]. 2010, vol.15, n.3, pp. 164-179. ISSN 1806-5821.

This paper discusses pragmatics fundamentals and assumptions often used for the understanding cognitive phenomena. Discussing the concepts of self, mind, world and truth in the pragmatism, the theoretical-epistemological marks of cognitive sciences, it points out implications of such concepts according to a pragmatic knowledge theory. A pragmatic approach can be seen as a species of pluralism rather than a monism or a dualism (like cognitivism) because there are many emergent ways in which things are defined or constituted as useful in different situations. A common theme uniting many pragmatism approaches to cognition is a shift in the way the person/environment relationship is conceived. Rather than a person being "in" an environment the activities of person and environment are viewed as parts of a mutually-constructed whole. Put simply, the inside/outside relationship between person and environment is replaced by a part/whole relationship. Viewed in this way, cognition is no longer a mirror of world but part of a natural process involving evolutionarily successful habits and capabilities. Cognition and world are mutually shaping. © Cien. Cogn. 2010; Vol. 15 (3): 164-179.
