FILGUEIRAS, Alberto. The influence of soccer teams uniforms characteristics in the manual reaction time in orienting of attention tasks. Ciênc. cogn. [online]. 2011, vol.16, n.1, pp. 019-034. ISSN 1806-5821.

Abstract The Psychology and the Neurosciences have several ways to measure and assess the cognitive functions, specially the Attention. The Orienting of Visual Attention is a cognitive phenomenon that influences the preparation for the motor act, and, therefore, the performance. In order to check how the uniforms of soccer teams in Rio de Janeiro impact on motor execution, we conducted an experiment of Manual Reaction Time (MRT) evaluating it under three aspects: uniforms that appear next to the Target-Stimulus, uniforms appearing opposite Target-Stimulus, and preference of participants for one team; in two experimental conditions: Valid Condition in which a Cue is presented pointing to the side on which the Target-Stimulus appears previously, and Invalid Condition, in which the Cue points to the opposite side. The experiment had 31 participants. The results showed a significant difference between Valid and Invalid Condition considering all participants and treatments. When analyzing the teams that came next to the Stimulus-Target, the pattern was maintained. However, when the uniform that appears opposite the Target-Stimulus was taken into account, there was no significant difference between the MRT Conditions when the uniform of the Clube de Regatas do Flamengo appeared. The phenomenon occurred for participants who self-declared fan of Flamengo, Fluminense and Vasco da Gama. The results indicate the influence of Flamengo's uniform in the decision making of participants. The results are discussed in the light of the Orienting of Attention theories on Psychology and on Neurosciences. © Cien. Cogn. 2011; Vol. 16 (1): 019-034.
