The museuns or science centers is proposed as one of its guiding complement formal education. From this premise, we investigated in this study, from questionnaires and interviews, how the activities of science museum are built into teachers' pedagogical practice in the Baixada Fluminense in Rio de Janeiro. From these results, we developed a pilot project for continuing teacher in Espaço Ciência InterAtiva (ECI), at the Instituto Federal do Rio de Janeiro (IFRJ) and at the end of the study we evaluated the impact this program had on participants. We use the tools of qualitative methodology, as well as the results obtained from the research were categorized its guiding of the content analysis. The results show that a significant number of teachers in of Baixada Fluminense/RJ still does not understand that science museum (spaces of non-formal education) can act as facilitators in the teaching / learning. However, the pilot of the ECI has provided some favorable changes in participating teachers and broke resistance with regard to certain scientific concepts. © Cien. Cogn. 2011; Vol. 16 (2): 096-112.
