Against concerns about the health of teachers, the study aimed to analyze the prevalence of ostheomuscular symptoms in teachers of the largest municipal elementary school of Latin America and the conditions of the workplace of the same. Because in literature contained a high prevalence of these symptoms in workers leading to absence from work. Method: The sample was composed by 140 teachers. To accomplish the research, a social-demographic questionnaire, a check-list for ergonomic, and the Nordic questionnaire were applied in order to evaluate the symptoms. For analysis of the data the SPSS 10.0 program was used. Results: 90,7% of the participants referred some symptom in the last 12 months and 67,1% in the last 7 days. The ones that reported some symptom in the last 7 days, the most affected areas were: spine 68,1%; lumbar 67%; shoulder 52,1%. It was also observed that the ergonomic condition of the work place was considered unsatisfactory 63,7% by the teachers. Conclusion: The study concluded that the teachers of the largest municipal elementary school of Latin America have a high prevalence of musculoskeletal symptoms mainly on spine, and that ergonomic conditions were considered inappropriate. Highlighting the need for school policies aimed at teachers turned to health care. © Cien. Cogn. 2011; Vol. 16 (3): 109-115
