Abstract

OLIMPIA ALMEIDA DE PAIVA, Maria  and  AFONSO LOURENCO, Abílio. Empirical study on the effectiveness of conflict negotiation in a school environment. Ciênc. cogn. [online]. 2011, vol.16, n.3, pp. 151-166. ISSN 1806-5821.

In the contemporary societies, the negotiation processes have been coming to assume a crucial relief in the administration of the most different conflicts that are developed in the different levels of the social reality. Those individuals who take part in the complex negotiating process are prone to express a whole group of individual characteristics which can affect their way of behaving. This study aims at determining whether Conscientiousness, as personality factor, as well as socio-demographic variables Sex, Age and Grade level, are relevant in the attempt to explain negotiation effectiveness. The sample taken into account for that study is of 407 secondary school students of a school in Oporto, Portugal. We used the NEO-PI-R to assess Conscientiousness and the QENCE to evaluate the negotiation effectiveness in a school context. The results suggest that Conscientiousness and the exogenous variables studied are essential for the understanding of the behavioural effectiveness of those involved in the negotiating process. © Cien.
