Abstract

CARVALHO DA SILVA, Adelmo. Children's literature and mathematical concepts development in regards to small children. Ciênc. cogn. [online]. 2012, vol.17, n.1, pp. 37-57. ISSN 1806-5821.

The aim of this work was the multiplication's concept, based on Children's Literature, applied in the classrooms of Kindergarten and Middle School, in a public school of João Pessoa, state of Paraíba. We have intended, through this work, to answer some questions related to the learning of mathematics, connected to Children's Literature, such as: (a) Can the construction's process of the multiplication's concept, in a significative and interdisciplinary way, be facilitated in the mathematical numbering process? (b) Which are the specific contributions that Children's Literature can bring to such construction's process?; (c) Will the mathematical, symbolical ideas comprehension, as well as the pictorial textual language contribute to the reader-student development? It was adopted the qualitative based approach research. The description, analysis and interpretation of the phenomena were observed through the ethnographical research. It was conducted, more specifically, a three student driven research. The results pointed out that the individuals investigated have reached a substantial and qualitative progress, in respect to the reading capability, the multiplication's concept of the significative development and other mathematical concepts, such as: proportionality, reversibility and commutativity, presented in this analysis, indispensable in the numbering process and in the significative mathematical learning. © Cien.
