Abstract

FIORENTIN, Cássia Fernanda  and  VARGAS, Divane de. Alcohol and tobacco use in a population of pregnant women and their knowledge about the effects of alcohol on the fetus. SMAD, Rev. Eletrônica Saúde Mental Álcool Drog. (Ed. port.) [online]. 2006, vol.2, n.2, pp. 0-0. ISSN 1806-6976.

This exploratory study adopted a qualitative approach and aimed to investigate pregnant women’s knowledge about the effects of alcohol on the fetus, as well as their consumption of alcohol and tobacco. Data were collected in a population of 20 pregnant women receiving prenatal care at a Basic District Health Unit in Ribeirão Preto-SP. The results show that 35% of these women used both alcohol and tobacco, and that they possessed little knowledge about the theme, which was more related to common sense beliefs than to formal preparation provided by the health team.

Keywords : Alcohol; Tobacco; Pregnancy; Knowledge.
