This study was developed to understand the factors that make young people look for illegal drugs. The work also aimed to support nursing actions through the data collected based on oral histories, as described by Meihy (1998). Qualitative methodology was used. The collected material was submitted to analysis and discussion. The research was accomplished at the Regional Hospital of Mato Grosso do Sul, at the psychiatry sector, where the narratives of 4 men were collected with a diagnosis of chemical addiction. The study revealed the vulnerability and existential void present in those chemically addicted young people.
