Abstract

Descriptive, qualitative study that aimed to describe risk and protection factors for drugs consumption referred by the family. The interview technique was used. Twenty-two mothers from a community located in Rio de Janeiro participated in the study in 2006. Results: mothers reported the environment, peer influence and drugs use by the family. Protection factors included dialogue, structured family and social and educative activities. It was concluded that risk and protection factors should be considered in the development of drug prevention programs targeting low-income families.
