Abstract

FRANCHINO, Diego; NOBREGA, Maria do Perpétuo S. S  and  CASTELLANOS, Marcelo Eduardo Pfeiffer. Sale of alcoholic drinks and violence: what bar owners think. SMAD, Rev. Eletrônica Saúde Mental Álcool Drog. (Ed. port.) [online]. 2008, vol.4, n.2, pp. 00-00. ISSN 1806-6976.

In recent years, there has been a significant growth in the violence phenomenon. The abusive consumption of alcohol represents an important factor to understand this phenomenon. We analyze bar owners’ perception of the relation between the sale of alcoholic drinks and the violence situation. A qualitative study was carried out in July 2005. In-depth interviews, with open-ended questions, were conducted with 15 bar owners. The transcripts were classified in six categories: Alcohol as a facilitator of action; approval of alcoholic drink sales; knowing how to drink; lack of control; non acceptance of the sale of alcoholic drink by bar owners; sale of alcoholic drinks and episodes of violence. The interviewees identify a relationship between alcohol and violence (although not always present), regulated by the consumers' ability in "knowing how to drink".
