Abstract

SECCO, Iara Aparecida de Oliveira; ROBAZZI, Maria Lúcia do Carmo Cruz; SOUZA, Francisco Eugênio Alves de  and  SHIMIZU, Denise Sayuri. Mental workloads and exhaustion of nursing workers at a teaching hospital in Paraná, Brazil. SMAD, Rev. Eletrônica Saúde Mental Álcool Drog. (Ed. port.) [online]. 2010, vol.6, n.1, pp. 1-17. ISSN 1806-6976.

This qualitative study aimed to analyze mental workloads of the nursing team at a teaching hospital and their relation with these workers' exhaustion. The methodological framework was based on the historical materialism. Semi-structured interviews were carried out with seven nurse managers. The findings evidenced that the mental loads are related to the inherent burden of this activity, and the contact with pain and death. Moreover, the life history and the socioeconomic difficulties have contributed to potentiate the mental loads. Prevention and care actions targeting nursing workers' physical and mental health are absolutely necessary.
