Abstract

VAVASSORI, Mariana Barreto. Dialogic Approach and Skillful Frustration: Their Intertwining in Gestalt Therapy. IGT rede [online]. 2017, vol.14, n.27, pp. 185-200. ISSN 1807-2526.

The objective of this paper is to discuss the notions of dialogic approach and skillful frustration in the practice of the gestalt-therapist. This is a literature review on these concepts, their definitions, and the potential overlaps that may be found between them. Considering the philosophical roots and the definition of what is understood by the dialogic approach, it should be understood as an attitude that must be present throughout the entire psychotherapeutic process. Skillful frustration is a tool that, as such, will occasionally be used at the right time. Both concepts have their particularities, but one is not the opposite of the other. Merging them into an effective instrument is possible, as Perls (1988) suggests, since both have a common origin: the self-support of the therapist.

Keywords : Dialogic approach; Skillful frustration; Therapeutic alliance; Gestalt therapy.
