Abstract

RODRIGUEZ, Cláudia Fernanda  and  KOVACS, Maria Julia. Speaking about death with adolescents. Estud. pesqui. psicol. [online]. 2005, vol.5, n.1, pp. 127-143. ISSN 1808-4281.

In adolescence there is a high risk to the occurence of unexpected deaths. This study investigates death and the relation to education using the video “Speaking about death with adolescents (KOVÁCS, ESSLINGER, VAICIUNAS,BROMBERG & MARQUES). The main issue in the video is the frontier concerning auto-destruction and pleasure. The objective of this study was to observe how adolescents and education professionals discuss death. Questionnaires were used to verify if the video stimulated the communication about death to adolescents. 64 participants were chosen in 2 schools in São Paulo, Brazil, 16 professionals and 48 students. Most adolescents considered that the video stimulated reflection about various issues about death, but they expected more real and shocking scenes. Suggestions were made to include issues about death itself, how to cope in death situation and not what causes death, because they have this information. Some professionals fear that the images shown in the video may stimulate self destructive behavior in opposition to what the adolescents thought.
