Abstract

SILVA, Maria Emília Pereira da. Burnout: why teachers suffers?. Estud. pesqui. psicol. [online]. 2006, vol.6, n.1, pp. 89-98. ISSN 1808-4281.

A syndrome takes place in the world of teachers work: the burnout, that means loss of energy. That syndrome does not represent a menace just against the health of teachers, but also against the health of the other workers and of the whole society. This paper begins with an analysis of the work of teaching in a local public school. In the sequence, examines the non-material character of that work and the suffering of the teacher vis-à-vis the mechanisms of organization and administration of the work, which are typical of the existing regime of flexible accumulation of capital. The causes and the manifestations of the burnout that victimize the workers, in general, and the teachers, in particular, are examined. In the end, two researches are presented, focusing the growing incidence of the syndrome and its relation with the conditions of the teacher’s work. The main purpose of this article is to contribute to the debate about the organization of the teacher’s work and to promote their disposition to fight against the present hegemonic political and economic model.
