DADALTO, Elâine Cristina Vargas  e  ROSA, Edinete Maria. Experience and Expectations of Mothers of Preterm Newborns Hospitalized in Neonatal Intensive Care Unit. Estud. pesqui. psicol. [online]. 2015, vol.15, n.3, pp. 814-834. ISSN 1808-4281.

The purpose was understand mothers' experiences and expectations towards preterm newborns hospitalized at neonatal intensive care units (NICUs), evaluating the initial proximal processes between mother-child. Planning was based on Bioecological Theory of Human Development, with participation of 62 mothers. Most mothers had never thought about the possibility of child's hospitalization. NICU was described as an environment of care and attention, but the experience was evaluated as a shocking event, regardless of educational background, social class, type of NICU and gestational age (p>0.05); they reported sadness and concern (45.2%), tiring but necessary routine (24.2%); and, even in face of happiness about recovery, the initial period was hard and painful (30.6%). For the majority there will be no negative consequences in mother-infant relationship (66.2%) and initial proximal processes combined physical contact, conversation and breastfeeding. Mothers were facing infant hospitalization under positive perspective, from their own bio-psychological resources, family and professional support.
