Abstract

BATISTA, Roberta Rangel  and  BONOMO, Mariana. Social representations of immigration and immigrants in British, French and German newspapers at the year of 2012. Estud. pesqui. psicol. [online]. 2017, vol.17, n.2, pp. 432-453. ISSN 1808-4281.

Immigration in Europe has become an important phenomenon due to the large number of people coming into this territory every day. However, the relationship between the immigrants and the local community is based on pre-existing categories that conceive the other as a threat. Based on the theoretical and conceptual contribution of the Social Representation Theory, this study aimed to identify and analyze the social representations of immigration and immigrant at British, French and German newspapers in 2012. Therefore, 127 reports, from well-known newspapers at the continent, were collected and later analyzed by the Alceste software. The results show that the newspapers' social representations of immigration and immigrant are related to themas and categories that have a lower social position. The immigrant is represented as unwanted, which can establish a rejection and keep the group at a non-familiarity condition.

Keywords : social representations; immigration; Europe.
