Abstract

VICTOR, Tânia Abreu da Silva; RAMOS, Dandara de Oliveira; MOURA, Maria Lucia Seidl de  and  FIORAVANTI, Ana Carolina Monnerat. Development of an instrument for the assessment of Satisfaction and Safety in the neighborhood. Estud. pesqui. psicol. [online]. 2017, vol.17, n.2, pp. 556-574. ISSN 1808-4281.

Gathering conceptual and psychometric evidence, this paper reports the first stage of development of the Satisfaction and Safety in the Neighborhood Scale (SSNS), an instrument designed for Brazilian contexts. Satisfaction and Safety are two evolutionary relevant dimensions of people's environment evaluations. The study involved 160 youngsters living in Rio de Janeiro. Principal component analysis yielded a multidimensional structure for the scale, with three components and good internal consistency (α=0,83). This structure was corroborated through principal axis factoring. Though not confirming the two dimensions originally proposed, an ANOVA with two subsets of youth in different living conditions (slums and more affluent neighborhoods) suggested that SNSS has a good discriminatory validity, proving to be able to assess different environmental evaluations of people. Next steps are suggested to continue the validation process of the instrument.
