Abstract

This study aimed to understand the perspective of mothers of popular groups concerning dialogues about sexuality with their adolescent children, mainly regarding to the challenges they face, the roles attributed to the school and the public health services. Semi-structured interviews and focal groups were carried out. Results evidenced that the participant mothers have presented difficulties to talk about sexuality with their children. The school was mentioned as an important source of information. Mothers also highlighted the health service as an important resource to be used by them and their children. Final considerations point out the relevance of the school and health institutions regarding the sexual education of adolescent, considering them as additional to the approach of the family. The complexity of the theme and the importance of the training of the health care and education professionals to discuss the subject are highlighted, considering that trained professionals may be an important source of help for the parents, facilitating their approach of the adolescents.
