Female incarceration has increased alarmingly. However, the predominant existence of mixed prisons demonstrates a lack of investments in infrastructure and in specific institutional procedures for the confinement of this population. This study aimed to discuss the reality of female incarceration in mixed prisons based on participant observations and the reports of women prisoners about their experiences. From a gender perspective, it presents the particularities of these environments, the ways of life and the struggles of women incarcerated in the face of the difficulties experienced. There is a precarious access to specialized services for women's health, suitable spaces for pregnant women or nurseries, as well as for intimate visits. Institutional dynamics are characterized by moralistic and sexist practices in support of a male patriarchal order on the part of prisoners and men. However, there is also resistance, so that women experience different ways of exercising their sexualities, desires and collective insurrections.
