Abstract

Stressors associated with a diagnosis and treatment of cancer cause important decline in quality of life and require adjustment from patient and family. The objective of this study was to review the literature about Cognitive-Behavioral Therapy (CBT) and cancer treatment. A literature review was conducted in the following data bases: Med line, Psycinfo and Scielo, using as key-words: oncology and cognitive behavioral therapy; cancer and cognitive behavioral therapy; psycho-oncology and cognitive behavioral therapy. Forty five articles written between 2004 and 2009 were found. Reviews, metanalisis, and studies including other diseases were excluded. In the end, 25 articles were reviewed. Studies were classified according to intervention objective. Results: the main applications of CBT in Oncology were: stress management, pain management, medication side effects management, depression and anxiety management, improvement of quality of life, interventions to improve sleep, obesity prevention and treatment, programs to quit smoking, and sexual complaints and others. CBT seem to be an efficient intervention for oncological treatments
