Abstract

GOMES, Jaqueline Andréia da Luz  and  PERGHER, Giovanni Kuckartz. The cognitive behavior therapy before and after cardiac surgery. Rev. bras.ter. cogn. [online]. 2010, vol.6, n.1, pp. 173-194. ISSN 1808-5687.

This article intends to determine through review of the literature, such as psychological accompaniments are performed through the cognitive-behavioral approach in patients who went through cardiac surgery. Cardiovascular diseases are the leading cause of death in all the world, and in Brazil, these diseases are the leading cause of death in the population. Cardiac surgery is a treatment, being considered of high complexity, for the surgical correction of heart disease, birth defects, anatomical abnormalities and treatment of chronic diseases such as atherosclerosis that causes coronary artery obstruction and leads to coronary artery bypass grafting. To go through the procedure, the patient should be in stable clinical status and receive follow-up of a multidisciplinary team, including the hospital psychologist. The counseling has been exerting an important role in the management of problems related to the disease, and the evaluation and preparation for invasive procedures. Cognitive Therapy is chosen by many psychologists because it presents short-term orientation to the present, and modification of dysfunctional thoughts and behaviors to use coping strategies more appropiate. Currently, psychoeducation, combined with guided discovery, and social skills training relaxation techniques and distraction are the most commonly used procedures.
