Abstract

MAGALHAES, Fernando Macedo; GUSMAM, Daniela Penachi Parolo  and  GRECCA, Kelly Renata Risso. Psychological preparation in patients undergoing cardiac surgery pediatric. Rev. bras.ter. cogn. [online]. 2010, vol.6, n.2, pp. 142-161. ISSN 1808-5687.

Hospitalization and surgical procedures may have a negative impact on patients. Children submitted to pediatric heart surgery may present adverse reactions such as crying, refusal to remain in hospital and development problems. The objective of this study was to evaluate the effects of psychological preparation prior to surgery, as well as symptoms of anxiety, fears and concerns related to hospitalization and surgery. Three children/adolescents with heart disease, ages between 9 and 14, participated in this study. Data was obtained with the use of the following instruments: Informed Consent Form - Adult and Child/Adolescent, Interview Protocol, Questionnaire on Childhood Surgery Concerns, Hospital Fear Scale, Children's Form of Manifest Anxiety Scale - CMAS, Preparation for Surgery Manual and Playtime Material. Assessment applying these scales and protocols were done at two different times preceding the surgical procedure, before and after psychological preparation. Pre-preparation results highlighted the occurrence of fear, anxiety and concerns. During psychological preparation patients were able to experience the surgical procedure in a playful manner, as well as ask questions, inquire about their doubts and demystify beliefs they may had regarding the invasive medical procedure. In post preparation re-evaluation there was a decrease in the previously presented symptoms. Although this study has been limited by the reduced number of subjects, it has been possible to conclude that psychological preparation is important because it helps in the development of more adequate strategies in coping with fears and concerns, thus reducing the occurrence of emotional and behavioral problems prior to and after surgery.
