MACUGLIA, Greici Rössler; ROSSATTO, Fabiane Caillava; TEIXEIRA, Marco Antonio Pereira  e  GIACOMONI, Cláudia Hofheinz. Quality of life and depression in hemodialysis patients. Rev. bras.ter. cogn. [online]. 2010, vol.6, n.2, pp. 162-177. ISSN 1808-5687.

The advances in medicine made it possible to chronic renal failure patients to maintain their lives through procedures such as hemodialysis. On the one hand, the life expectancy of patients has increased, on the other, the restoration of full health will not be possible, favoring the emergence of disorders such as depression, and impairing quality of life. This study aims to investigate the indicators of quality of life and prevalence of depression in adult patients undergoing hemodialysis. Forty nine patients were evaluated with the Hospital Anxiety and Depression Scale (HADS-D) and the Assessment Questionnaire Quality of Life (WHOQOL-bref). The results indicated that 28.6% of the sample had a mild or moderate depression, with women being most affected, and a better quality of life in relation to the psychological and social relations. The HADS-D had significant negative correlations with all domains of WHOQOL-bref, especially the psychological domain. The data suggests that increased survival of these patients does not necessarily mean better quality of life, indicating the need to direct attention to all aspects of patient's life, not only the physical aspects.
