The diagnosis of cancer and the process of coping with the disease are experienced by the patient with great difficulty due to the complexity of the treatment involved. The present study aimed to evaluate the presence of the diagnosis of stress, possible stressors and frames characteristic of stress in women diagnosed with malignant breast cancer in the age group between 40 and 60 years. The sample size was comprised of twenty women, served by an institution of a city in the state of São Paulo. Three instruments were used to collect data: identification form, questionnaire of closed questions multiple choice and application of Stress Symptoms Inventory by Lipp. The data collected were analyzed using descriptive statistical method. The results have highlighted the way in which people evaluate, confront and overcome situations can produce stress, and, in situations where the diagnosis of stress is to be present, treatment can bring unintended consequences.
