Abstract

The general objective of this study was to evaluate the contribution of a Psychological Intervention Program under the approach of Cognitive-Behavior Therapy so people living with HIV/AIDS could follow a treatment and have quality of life. Specific aims: to know and analyze the thoughts, emotions, and behavior, related to the health treatment of the participants; to identify and analyze their social support sources; to investigate the psychological aspects, treatment compliance and life quality of the population under study; to identify through what people say are their difficulties in following the antiretroviral treatment and their feelings related to the intervention of the cognitive-behavior therapy. Participated in the program 11 HIV-positives that followed antiretroviral treatment and were treated by the public health service in the Southern Region of Brazil. This is a qualitative, descriptive-exploratory study with recording and transcription of eight sessions and semistructured interview for the evaluation of the program. The results show that cognitive-behavior therapy had an important contribution to the identification as much as to the changes in thoughts, feelings, and behavior, related to the compliance to the treatment, as well as the social support and life quality of the people in the program.
