MENDES, Marco Aurelio. Emotion-focused therapy and the processes of change in psychotherapy. Rev. bras.ter. cogn. [online]. 2015, vol.11, n.2, pp. 96-104. ISSN 1808-5687.  http://dx.doi.org/10.5935/1808-5687.20150014.

Emotion-Focused Therapy is a neohumanistic and experiential psychotherapy, based on the application of empathy in the therapeutic context combined with experiential interventions triggered by specific markers observed during sessions. The core goal of this model is the restructuring of client's emotional schemes, creating personal meanings and a new sense of Self. This work makes a brief review about emotions and the consensus that emerged from neuroscientific studies in the last decades. The theoretical assumptions of Emotion-Focused Therapy will also be presented due to the growing importance of emotional-focus approach in psychotherapist's offices and the scarcity of literature on this topic in Portuguese language. A review of the main authors and publications was conducted, as well as the description of some interventions that occur in psychotherapy when using Emotion-Focused Therapy approach.
