AQUINO, Thiago Antônio Avellar de; DARA, Dany Monique Batista  e  SIMEAO, Shirley de Souza Silva. Depression, ontological time perception and meaning of life. Rev. bras.ter. cogn. [online]. 2016, vol.12, n.1, pp. 35-41. ISSN 1808-5687.  http://dx.doi.org/10.5935/1808-5687.20160006.

Recent studies examine the relationship between cognitivism and existentialism about psychotherapy issues. This study aimed at investigating the relationship between the degree of depression and the meaning of life. The sample comprised of 110 patients, mostly of the female gender (63.6%), with a mean age of 27.1 years (SD = 8.51, ranging from 18 to 65). All patients recruited for the study were undergoing treatment of psychotherapy. They answered a questionnaire in which three measures were incorporated: Meaning of Life Questionnaire (MLQ), Beck Depression Inventory (BDI), and Ontological Time Perception (OTP) questionnaire. The results showed negative correlations between depression and presence of meaning, perception of past, perception of present, and perception of future. A multiple regression analysis identified two protective variables against depression: presence of meaning and positive perception of future. These results were discussed on the basis of existential cognitivism.
