COGINOTTI, Izabel Nilsa Brocco  e  REIS, Aline Henriques. Excoriation disorder (Skin Picking): literature review. Rev. bras.ter. cogn. [online]. 2016, vol.12, n.2, pp. 64-72. ISSN 1808-5687.  http://dx.doi.org/10.5935/1808-5687.20160012.

The excoriation disorder is characterized by the behavior of pinching, squeezing or biting the skin in a recurring form, producing lesions that cause suffering and damages in important areas of life. The aim of this article is to perform a non-systematic literature review , based on a survey of prevalence, incidence, factors related to the disorder, scales used for evaluation and empirically validated interventions for the excoriation disorder (skin picking ), considering the emphasis received from the incorporation of the diagnosis to DSM-5 and the lack of national literature in the area. According to the theoretical survey, the literature shows that 1.4% of the adult population presents the disorder and that it is commonly associated with obsessive-compulsive disorder, trichotillomania and major depressive disorder. Among the factors related to the development and maintenance of the psychopathology can be cited dermatological conditions such as acne, personality factors, emotional conflicts in the history of life and psychiatric comorbidities. Treatment involves drugs: antidepressants and antipsychotics and psychotherapy: cognitive and behavioral techniques.
